More than 60 years ago, Star of
the Sea was one of three founding parishes for the St.
Catharines CYO Minor Hockey. After a brief absence, the Redwings
have returned. Initial efforts began in the spring of 1994 with
an enthusiastic fan named Father Peter Rowe. After his summer
transfer, we were very fortunate to receive Father Randy
Gallant, who continues to be a pillar of support. As every new
club, we had the usual obstacles to overcome, but thanks to a
terrific group of people, our membership was able to provide
financial support through various fundraisers such as t-shirt
sales, raffle tickets, and the Christmas Dance. Being deemed the
"new kids on the block", we also had some unique hurdles to
overcome such as having to buy our own team sweaters and goalie
equipment. Thanks to the St. Catharines Minor Lacrosse
Association, we were able to borrow sweaters until we were able
to purchase our own. It was wonderful to see Star of the Sea
pull together to ensure success of this hockey program. Thanks
to the Principals of the area schools, St Ann's, Michael J.
Brennan and St. James for their help in communicating the return
of our hockey program to the kids.
SOTS started their first season back with 6 teams.
